Dark Tourism
is tourism associated with death, suffering and the macabre. Ireland offers visitors many such sites - workhouses, prisons, cemeteries, battlefields - and yet there is a distinct reluctance to even acknowledge that many of the stories told abut the sites are dark and tragic. Given that many Irish pride themselves on their love of darkness, that we embrace dark humour with enthusiasm I wanted to see if there was any connection with a relentlessly bleak past and a desire to find humour in even the most dire circumstances.
